See additional links below for more images from this series

The hole on the right is were fluorescent fixtures were attached.
The images below illustrate before and after stages of the restoration of the 36 inner panels and 18 outer cornice panels. The original beveled mirrors were all damaged beyond use and most of the brass brackets were missing. As needed these elements were reproduced. The small bull nose molding that framed the panels were also replaced. There were 6 pieces of molding per panel, each requiring custom fitting, gold leafing and shaping to fit properly. Kim Lazare created a special stamp out of walnut with a male and female piece to enable us to shape the brass brackets to fit around the beveled mirrors. The round colored glass pieces were backed with silver gilding. Each painting was carefully cleaned, color matched as needed were paint was missing and re varnished.

The left hand image shows the lower half of the picture after careful cleaning and upper portion what it looked like before the restoration. The right hand panel is show fully restored.
The images on the left are examples of the condition the panels were in before the restoration began.

These photos show the re created Cornice panels. Notice the "Masks" and angels that surround them. All the jewels were replaced. The condition of the these panels were in total disrepair and the original images could not be saved. Newman designed and hand painted scenes of the San Francisco Bay Area in their place.
